Overview

The book introduces 16-year old Raven Madison, a girl living in Dullsville, who is constantly complaining that there is nothing to do, at least until Alexander Sterling, a vampire, moves in. Raven falls for him, but they, like any other couple, have obstacles. The story is told from Raven's point of view for the entire book.

Plot

The book starts out with Raven talking about the bold declaration in kindergarten that she wanted to become a vampire. She met her best friend, Becky Miller, in third grade, and since they were both outcasts, they got along well. She also made an enemy, Trevor Mitchell, and they fight constantly. In the present, it is Raven's sixteenth birthday, but it begins no differently than any other day. Becky arrives with two gifts: a leather choker with a pewter bat charm on it, and news of a new family, the Sterlings, moving into the mansion on Benson Hill.

At school, Trevor asks Raven what she will do to make her sweet-sixteen memorable, and she answers that she will crash Matt Wells, Trevor's best friend's, party that night. At the party, a drunk Trevor kisses her. Raven gets him to strip naked, steals all of his clothes, and leaves the party with Becky. Heading home, Raven and Becky almost hit a boy with pale skin and black clothes. But when Raven goes for a look, all she finds is a paint can and spilled paint.

On Halloween, Raven chooses to be a tennis player. When she goes trick-or-treating, she goes to the mansion on Benson Hill. The butler, Creepy Man, ran out of candy, so she gives him some candy and a spider ring. Gothic Guy, the boy Raven almost hit, comes out. Raven gets scared and runs away, leaving her tennis racket behind. Creepy Man comes to the school, trying to find Raven and return the racket. Raven has to get a job at Armstrong Travel Agency. While she is there, Creepy Man comes and books tickets for Mr. and Mrs. Sterling to Romania, and talks about Gothic Guy, who is 17. Raven later quits her job.

She begins to see Gothic Guy around town and decides to break into their house to find out if they are vampires, like the rumors say. She meets Gothic Guy and sees the spider ring she gave Creepy Man on his finger. Later, she finds a dinner invitation from Gothic Guy aka Alexander. When she gets there, she is shown in by Creepy Man aka Jameson, and finally meets Alexander formally. They get to know each other and Raven sets up another date with him, a picnic in the cemetery. Their next date is watching Dracula at his house, where they share their first kiss. He accidentally bites her, but all ends well when she asks him to the Snow Ball and he accepts.

At the Snow Ball, Trevor interrupts Alexander and Raven when he reveals that he blackmailed Becky into going to the dance with him and told her about what Raven thought Alexander was (a vampire). Alexander gets mad at Raven, and Raven gets mad at Becky and Trevor. Alexander doesn't speak to Raven. Raven visits Alexander's grandmother's monument at the cemetery and admits she loves him. She apologizes to Alexander and he shows her his room, where she sees that he has been painting a picture of Raven when she was dressed for the Snow Ball.

As she gets ready to leave, Raven sees Alexander with a cape and slicked-back hair, looking like a vampire. She thinks his fangs are fake, but when she looks into a mirror, she sees that where Alexander should be, there is nothing. She realizes that he really is a vampire and does not take it too well. When she goes to find him the next day, he and Jameson are gone. The only thing Raven finds is a note: “Because I love you". As Raven cries, she notices a bat on the gate. She remembers that bats are blind but this one seems to be staring purposefully at her. Raven reaches for the bat, asking, "Alexander?" but the bat flies away.
